Follow Me: What Makes You Followable
“Follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”
- Matthew 4:19
The Question That Changed My Message
When I first sat down to prepare this sermon, I had something entirely different in mind. But in a quiet moment during a leadership meeting, I felt the Spirit whisper, “Change course.”
That’s how this message was born - from a deep stirring to ask a question I couldn’t shake:
What makes someone truly followable?
Not in the sense of charisma or position. Not about titles, influence, or image.
But what is it about a person - about you - that makes someone want to follow your example toward Christ?
Because before we can lead anyone into life, we must first become followable.
The Simplicity of Jesus’ Call
Imagine it: You’re busy working. Nets in the water. Bills to pay. Life to manage.
And a man walks up to you and says,
“Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
No sermon. No persuasion. No introduction.
And somehow, you drop everything and follow.
What did Jesus have that made ordinary people leave everything behind?
What did He carry that compelled hearts instantly?
The Three Elements of Followability
After studying that simple phrase - “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men” - I realized it holds three divine ingredients that make a life followable.
Clarity
Jesus didn’t leave them guessing. He was clear: Follow Me.
Clarity cuts through confusion. People crave direction in a chaotic world.Transformational Value
He said, “I will make you.”
He promised change, not status, but transformation.
He took what they already knew (“fishing”) and gave it eternal purpose.Mission
“Fishers of men.”
A new focus. A bigger story. A cause beyond themselves.
Followability, then, isn’t about being impressive; it’s about being clear, transformative, and missional.
People follow when they’re fed - when your life offers direction, change, and meaning.
The Moses Parallel
Moses’ story echoes the same pattern.
From Pharaoh’s palace to a desert wilderness, he thought his days of leadership were over. But God spoke to him from the burning bush with clarity: “Go. Set My people free.”
He promised transformation:
“I will be with you.”
And He gave mission:
“Lead My people out of Egypt.”
And like many of us, Moses began with excuses:
“I’m not a leader.”
“I have nothing to offer.”
“I don’t want to mislead anyone.”
“No one will follow me.”
But God doesn’t call the qualified - He qualifies the called.
The Bridge You’ve Already Built
We all have struggles.
Some were deep, painful valleys. Others were quiet, private battles.
But if you’ve overcome something, you’ve built a bridge.
Someone else - right now - is standing where you once stood, staring at the same chasm.
They don’t know how to cross.
And maybe God is asking you to walk back across that bridge, reach out your hand, and say,
“I’ve been where you are. Come, let me show you the way.”
That’s discipleship in its simplest, most human form.
You don’t have to be perfect - you just have to be willing to fetch someone else.
Precious Pearl #1: Be Crystal Clear
“Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for God’s glory.”
- 1 Corinthians 10:31-11:1
Clarity begins with understanding why you follow Jesus.
If He wasn’t changing you, would you still follow?
I follow Him because He has changed me - and because I need Him to keep changing me.
That’s the clarity that makes your life magnetic. People follow authenticity, not performance.
Precious Pearl #2: Surrender to the Shaping
“For we are His creation, created in Christ Jesus for good works.”
- Ephesians 2:10
When Jesus says, “I will make you,” He means it.
A blacksmith doesn’t need perfect iron - just raw metal on the anvil.
You don’t have to be flawless. You just have to stay on the anvil long enough for the Master Craftsman to shape you.
Be a student of what He’s doing in your life. Study your transformation.
Because the areas He’s refining in you today are the very tools He’ll use to reach others tomorrow.
Precious Pearl #3: Be Intentionally Missional
“The hour has come for you to wake up from your sleep.”
- Romans 13:11
We often say, “I’m too busy. I’m too ordinary. Someone else will do it.”
But Jesus called the disciples while they were busy.
He didn’t wait for the perfect time.
A broken net in the water still catches more fish than a brand-new net on the shore.
It’s not about your condition - it’s about your obedience.
Be in the water. Be present. Be willing.
The Choice Before You
You can either live a followable life, being shaped and shaping others for Christ or you can stay complacent, nets empty.
You may feel ordinary, but in the hands of Jesus, you become a compass pointing others to Him.
Reflective Questions
What clarity do I need in my own faith right now?
Where is Christ shaping me that I’ve resisted?
Who can I walk back across the bridge to help this week?
Final Word
The call to follow Jesus is not an invitation to perfection.
It’s a promise of transformation.
He’s still saying, “Follow Me, and I will make you.”
And through your life - your clarity, your transformation, your mission-
others will find the courage to follow Him too.
